Information on Italians that may have settled on the Isle of Wight, UK (in 1900s)

by Jennifer
(Dorset, UK)

My grandfather is half Italian, born out of 'wedlock' and adopted by a family in Dorset. He was born in Ryde on the Isle of Wight in 1908. All I know is that his father was an Italian immigrant.

My own father tried for years to trace the real father but we didn't have enough information to help us.

It is a long shot, but I would be grateful if anyone knows if there was a community of Italians that settled on the Isle of Wight sometime around the 1900s. I appreciate that I won't ever find out who my great grandfather is, but it would be interesting to find out even a little bit of information about the people that settled there from Italy.

Thank you.

Italians on Isle of Wight
by: Elizabeth Stevens

My late husbands maternal great grandfather John Lake was Italian, born Italy in 1818 and his father was Francesco. Must have talen an English name, married a girl from Ryde called Sarah Elizabeth they had 6 children, my husbands grandmother was Lucy Louisa Lake. She had 2 children out of wedlock then married in 1903 and had a further 4. My mother in law was the youngest child. By then they were living in London but subsequently moved to Bristol.
I have marriage certificates for John Lake that states his father deceased
The IOW has a good history centre they helped me find churches and cemetery's around Ryde.
I actually found a cousin of my husband who still lives on IOW

I am anxious about the possibility that on the off chance that you are an American resident, you are not permitted to move and work in Italy. Just natives of the EU are permitted to do so, as Italy is a signatory to the Schengen understanding that limits movement to various European nations in the Schengen space.

I have not heard about any community of Italians that settled on the Isle of Wight.I think you should consult people who are living there for many years; they can give you accurate information about them.
