My Family's Emigration History
by Tony Conte
Bust of Famous relative in Mirabella Eclano
My grandparents all immigrated to the USA from the Campania in the pre-WWI era. My paternal grandfather left Avella in the province of Avellino alone in 1912 when he was 14 years old and settled in the North End of Boston where he worked as a tailor and met my grandmother who left Naples around the same era.
My maternal grandfather left Viggiano in the province of Potenza for Boston where he met my grandmother who emigrated from Mirabella Eclano in the province of Avellino. My maternal grandmother's family had been part of the local gentry of the town with doctors and professors in the family but when they lost their money, they had to leave the town.
